Engineering Education in Italy

Italy boasts a renowned reputation in the fields of design, architecture, and engineering, making it a prime destination for students seeking a top-tier engineering education. The country offers numerous prestigious universities, affordable tuition and living costs, and generous scholarship opportunities, establishing itself as an attractive choice compared to other European nations. To enroll in these esteemed institutions, you typically need to graduate from a high school in Turkey and enter the YKS exam. Some universities might also have their own entrance exams.

General Admission Requirements for Engineering Programs in Italy:

  • Completion of 12 years of education in Turkey or finishing the first year at a university.

  • Entry through the YKS exam, although current university students can use their student documentation.

  • For English-taught programs, succeeding in an interview or having a TOEFL/IELTS certificate (minimum 5.5 for IELTS and 70 for TOEFL) might be necessary.

  • For programs taught in Italian, reaching the Italian proficiency level set by the consulate is required.

  • Passing university-specific entrance exams. Many universities require the TOLC-I test for admission.

What is the TOLC Test? The TOLC is an online examination system validated and managed by CISIA (Consortium of Inter-University Integrated Access Systems). It has been utilized since 2018 in cooperation with CISIA-affiliated universities, both on-campus and virtually, ensuring a supervised and secure testing environment. There is no set minimum score for the TOLC exam as each university sets its own requirements.

The TOLC-I Exam Explained:The TOLC-I, aimed at students wishing to study Engineering, Programming, and Software disciplines in English or Italian, consists of 50 multiple-choice questions and lasts for 110 minutes. The questions break down as follows:

  • 20 questions on mathematics (covering numbers, absolute values, polynomials, systems of equations, functions, logarithms, trigonometry, etc.),

  • 10 questions on logical reasoning,

  • 10 questions on physics and chemistry (covering optics, statics, thermodynamics, mechanics, inorganic chemistry, chemical reactions, the periodic table, organic chemistry),

  • 10 questions on text analysis.

Evaluating the TOLC-I:In the TOLC-I, aside from the questions in English, each correct answer scores 1 point, unanswered questions score 0, and incorrect answers deduct 0.25 points. The exam can be taken in either English (English TOLC-I) or Italian (TOLC-I). An optional section assessing English language skills, consisting of 30 questions over 15 minutes, can be added to the English TOLC-I exam. Once the TOLC-I concludes, you can review your scores by section, other exam details, and your total score on-screen.

University Fees and Scholarship Opportunities:

  • Annual registration fee of 200 Euros and tuition fees of 2000 Euros. Each student pays according to their economic situation, with most Turkish students paying the minimum due to the current exchange rate. If a scholarship is granted, up to 90% of the registration fee is reimbursed.

  • Annual scholarships of up to 7000 Euros are available. Scholarship recipients are exempt from tuition fees. The scholarship covers personal expenses like accommodation and meals. If no scholarship is awarded, tuition fee reductions or even free tuition may be provided based on the economic circumstances of the students.

Bocconi University, for instance, charges an annual fee of 18,130 Euros, but offers generous scholarship opportunities up to 100%, depending on your economic situation and your performance in the SAT and Bocconi Test exams.
